LOCATION SCOUTING #6: Portland Head Light

Portland Head Light is located on Cape Elizabeth, Portland, Maine. It’s one of the biggest and most historical landmarks of New England. This Lighthouse has been guiding sailors and maritime travelers for hundreds of years. Having an early importance all the way back to the founding times of this country. Today it is the pride of New England and also one of my new favorite shooting locations.

Portland Head Light

1990's anime ending theme wallpaper. I almost broke my ankle running back and forth to get this shot. For some reason my remote was not behaving for me.

Going into the day, we had a pretty late start. That was mostly due to us getting into the state way past our planned time and we needed rest.

The overall location had was raw earth and abrasive shores, so the footing was a bit tricky. Not everyone in the group was used to this sort of thing but even still, this turned out to be a good thing when it came to posing later. This aspect though was really cool. Usually at landmarked locations like this, usually the shoreline would be blocked off or listed off limits but here you could pretty much do anything you want. (Some parts were blocked off, but most of it was assessable.) Obviously, you’ll have to be on guard but if you want to rock climb off the side of a coast, then that’s your choice!

As for the types of photos I was aiming for, I kept things simple with lifestyle and fashion style photography. Before coming, I gave everyone suggestions for outfits. Some came with traveler aesthetics, and some came with traditional nautical style clothing.

I didn’t get everything I wanted to get due to the limited time I spent here. Now that it’s scouted, I know for sure I want to come back. I’m going to aim to get more landscape photos, shots of myself and Surreal shots.

Keeping up with tradition, with every successful location scouting mission, we must grab food. The group split in two to tackle a couple different restaurants and here’s our small mini coverage on both.

Luke’s Lobster Portland Pier is situated right on the water, in the heart of downtown Portland, Maine. If you’re like me and really enjoy the romance of a maritime atmosphere, then this location is already very welcoming. Sitting on a port decorated with lots of buoys, lobster crates, boats and fishermen, the aesthetics of the place and location feels amazing. It’s exactly what you would want from an establishment that sells lobster.

The numbers may have been inflated a bit since we were here on this trip during a holiday weekend, but the activity, aroma and energy of the place was really lively in the best way possible. There was a true sense of a maritime nightlife here.

Our crew pulled up to this establishment with a mission of devouring the most delicious seafood we could even imagine. As a person that heard so many stories about how great seafood in Maine was, I set the bar mentally really high. And let me tell you something, the chefs at this place didn’t back down from this challenge at all. We came in here with the intention of destroying that menu, of eating everything on it, and they accepted our challenge. The food was amazing, exquisite and spectacular.

Some of the dishes we ordered ranged from; lobster, lobster bisk, clam chowder, mussels, clams, fried scallops, lobster roll, sourdough bread and calamari. While the lobster was just as amazing as we expected it to be, the sleeper mvp were the fried scallops. They were sooo good we had order at least 5 more plates of them. The drinks were nice as well, between our party we got a decent range of nonalcoholic to alcoholic beverages. Mine especially was really nice.

The service was incredible as well, we had the most amazing waiter, who recommended to us all the greatest dishes. She also shared some insight and stores on some of the ingredients, and even showed us some awesome shirts which we ended up getting as well. The whole experience was great.

I really need to come back here specifically. I’m not sure how the other Luke’s lobster branches are, but I really want to come back here.

Luke’s continues to flex with how fresh their lobsters are by having an authentic lobster warehouse attached adjacent to the restaurant.

We were even able to hold one of the little guys. I personally couldn’t stop fanboying over the little experience. I wanted to take it home with me. 😂
