Black Sands Beach Shoot

Shooting at Black Sands Beach was amazing, I need to go back or just book a trip to Iceland asap.

When most people think of Black Sands beach they think of Iceland, and as they should. Reynisfjara is a beautiful goal of a destination that I really would love to get to someday. Shooting subjects on black sands contrasted by pieces of scattered glaciers would be nothing short of incredible. That said I was pleasantly surprised that California had a black sands beach as well, and this one was beautiful in its own right.

In hindsight I regret not taking a few moments to shoot the beach itself. Location photography

To set some foundation for the trip, Master Jack and I try to plan shooting concepts to collaborate on every summer. We’re currently pushing for more of these shoots to be done on location. For this shoot we had her, myself, her sister and a talent Eerinyx. Coming into the day I was really tired from the shoots from the night before, but I was still excited about the concept shoot we were about to tackle.

With that said, the concept itself was simple. We wanted to capture a model coming out of water. Original source photo was using black and white as their color palette but I decided ultimately to shoot in color.

Just getting to the location was a whole trip in itself. I’m pretty sure we got lost a few times trying to navigate through the fog and mountain roads. Once the car stretch was finished we still had to get down the mountain on foot to reach the beach.

Upon arrival I was shocked to see the sands were actually black. I thought it would be mud and a play on words.

White Sands Beach, Florida

For some reason it’s just hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that the America has some cool places too. Especially since I was at a pure white sands beach the year before in Tampa, Florida

The shoot itself was mostly me trying to get a few quality shots while making sure I didn’t fall in the water with my camera. Luckily I avoided my camera taking damage and managed to get quite a bit of quality shots. 10/10 would do this again.
Check out the finished photos on the collection’s page.
