LOCATION SCOUTING #4: Fort Tilden

Center Rd, Queens, NY 11697

A graffiti filled beach with the ruins of an old Fortress

Darien and MiGuo shooting

Not much to say about this place other than it’s another beach location, but it’s a beach location in New York City with a slightly different twist. It’s more out of the way, it’s a bit unkept, but has a real grudge feel to it. This will be a great place to do some fashion shoots. While we were over here, we pulled out the smoke bombs and got to work.

PROS:

  • Parking: Decent to good parking depending on the time of year. Summer and active beach months tend to get crowded and expensive.

  • Long beach strip: There’s a lot of beach if you’re willing to walk it. While the initial spot isn’t the dream place for swimsuits, you’ll hit some decent areas if you keep walking towards the edge of the Rockaways.

  • Structures: There are a number of abandoned structures here that make cool subjects and backgrounds for photos.

CONS:

  • Food & Restrooms: I hope you packed a snack, because if not, your stomachs will mark the end of your shoots. There’s not much food or restroom options in the area. And once you step foot on the beach, they’ll be a lot of ground to cover to and back.

  • Transportation: Even though this isn’t the most remote area we covered, it’s not as easy to get here. Your train options are limited and almost need to drive here yourself if you want to see it.

Grade: B

The cool structures of the area really makes up for where this place falls short. Overall, it’s a nice area to take photos at. Just make sure you look into this area first before coming out here. Make sure it’s worth it for you.

Photo I took of Darien at Fort Tilden

You can definitely do a lot of surreal and fashion photo sets here.

If you want to do cosplay, I recommend.

  • Nier: Automata

  • Star Wars

In my opinion, aim for overcast, rainy or foggy days. I think that type of weather would help with atmospheric moody lighting.
