north shore’s Shark's Cove

Sharks Cove, much like the cliffs at Makapuu Beach, is made up of dark lava rock. Situated along the North Shore of Oahu, the Sharks Cove is a part of the Pupukea Beach Park and consists of stunning formations above and below the water. Due to this, several species of marine life are found in this region.

The underwater rock formations create many unique shapes, which make this site popular as a tourist attraction. Not only that, but this spot is also considered one of the best in the world for snorkeling. So if you're looking for some underwater adventure while surrounded by colorful tropical fish and cute sea turtles, Sharks Cove is for you. If you want to know more about our experience here, keep reading!

Why Sharks Cove?

The name, Sharks Cove, can sound quite scary at first. I mean, even for the snorkeling enthusiast, swimming with sharks doesn't seem like such a great idea. But that's the thing! Sharks Cove gets its name from a famous story according to which the outline of the reef outside the cove resembles a shark when seen from above. Meanwhile, the chances of you running into an actual shark are close to none.

Sharks Cove is a part of the Marine Conservation District, so keeping it clean is pretty strict. However, Sharks Cove is the perfect spot for both snorkelers and scuba divers. The lava rock bed has formed unique tunnels and underwater caves that can be explored, especially during the daytime. While out in the waters, you will encounter all sorts of marine creatures, from small fish such as Triggerfish, Butterflyfish, Parrotfish, and Damselfish to crabs and turtles.

However, it is essential to note that wearing reef shoes or fins is recommended as the jagged lava rock and reef edges can be very sharp and injure you. There is no lifeguard present at Sharks Cove, so you're on your own. Another thing to keep in mind is that both snorkeling and scuba diving should be carried out in summer. The waters are relatively calm, and the sunshine improves visibility. Winter in Oahu is marked by strong winds, which create equally strong currents in the water and can be dangerous.

Amenities

Restrooms and outdoor showers are available along the beach. You can also find gift shops across the street with different types of trinkets and souvenirs that you can purchase. Food trucks are also present just outside the cove and provide delicious and fresh meal options to visitors. We got the garlic shrimp over white rice, and after a day of exploring the beach, it tasted heavenly! Parking is also available along the shore, but it gets pretty busy during the summer months. As it's first come, first serve, you are sure to secure a spot if you arrive early.

Conclusion

Sharks Cove is a stunning location to explore when in Oahu. While the dark rock against blue waters forms the perfect backdrop for photography, it is pretty dangerous because of the highly slippery and sharp rocks jutting out along the shore. So grab your sunscreen and lounge on the beach for a much-needed break!
